GitHub Copilot Updates: Flex Allotments and New Max Plan for Enhanced AI Coding
Introduction
GitHub Copilot users have been asking whether the included usage in each plan will be sufficient when the platform moves to usage-based billing on June 1st. Longer agent runs, multi-step workflows, and more powerful models are expected to increase consumption. In response, GitHub is refreshing its individual plan lineup with a new flex allotment system and introducing a high-volume Max plan. Here's what you need to know.

Overview of Changes
Starting June 1, 2026, GitHub Copilot will adopt usage-based billing across all individual plans: Free, Pro, Pro+, and the new Max. The Free tier continues to offer limited code completions each month, plus restricted chat and agent usage with auto mode. Paid plans now bundle usage in two components:
- Base credits – equal to your subscription price and fixed permanently.
- Flex allotment – variable additional usage on top of base. Flex amounts can change over time.
The total included usage (base + flex) is outlined in the table below.
Plan Details (as of June 1, 2026)
| Plan | Price | Base Credits | Flex Allotment | Total Included Usage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $10/month | $10 | $5 | $15 |
| Pro+ | $39/month | $39 | $31 | $70 |
| Max | $100/month | $100 | $100 | $200 |
Note: Code completions and next edit suggestions remain unlimited on all paid plans and do not consume any credits.
How Flex Allotments Work
Your base credits are consumed first. Once they are used up, the flex allotment is automatically applied at the same rates across your IDE, github.com, and the CLI. You don’t need to activate anything or manage separate buckets. A dashboard will show your available credits and usage history. If you exhaust the entire included amount (base + flex), you can purchase additional credits and continue working without interruption.

Why Flex Can Change
The flex allotment is designed to adapt as the economics of AI evolve. Factors like model pricing, new models, and efficiency improvements will influence the flex amount. Your base credits, however, are locked to your subscription price and never vary.
What to Do
If you are currently on a monthly Pro or Pro+ plan, nothing is required. The additional flex usage will be applied automatically on June 1, 2026, when all accounts migrate to usage-based billing. No action is needed to start benefiting from the extra capacity.
Conclusion
The introduction of flex allotments and the Max plan gives developers more predictable and flexible access to Copilot’s AI capabilities. With a fixed base and variable flex, GitHub matches subscription value to real-world usage patterns. For full technical details, refer to the official documentation.
