A new third-party accessory for Valve's upcoming Steam Controller promises to turn the gamepad into a makeshift Steam Deck. The Basegrip, created by accessory maker Mechanism, will launch on May 4—the same day Valve releases its refreshed controller. The device lets users mount their smartphone directly onto the controller, creating a portable all-in-one gaming system.
“We saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between the Steam Controller and the mobile gaming experience,” said a Mechanism spokesperson in an exclusive statement. “The Basegrip effectively gives users a handheld PC gaming rig without needing to buy a Steam Deck.”
Key Features and Availability
The Basegrip is designed to fit Valve's new gamepad precisely. It includes an adjustable clamp that securely holds most modern smartphones. The accessory is priced competitively, though Mechanism has not disclosed the exact cost.
For DIY enthusiasts, Mechanism is also releasing free 3D-printable files. This allows users to manufacture their own Basegrip at home. “We believe in accessibility,” the spokesperson added. “Offering a free printing option ensures that cost is not a barrier to innovation.”
Background
Valve first teased the new Steam Controller in early 2025, promising improved ergonomics and haptic feedback. The original Steam Controller, released in 2015, developed a cult following but never achieved mass adoption. The updated version aims to correct past shortcomings and integrate better with Steam's mobile streaming features.
Mechanism, known for niche gaming peripherals, spotted an opportunity early. “When we saw the Steam Controller specs, we knew a phone mount would be a natural companion,” the spokesperson said. “Streaming from a PC to a phone is already popular—this just makes the controls more tactile.”
What This Means
The Basegrip effectively challenges the Steam Deck's portability without the high price tag. For users who already own a powerful gaming PC and a recent smartphone, the accessory offers a budget-friendly alternative to Valve's handheld console. It also boosts the utility of the new Steam Controller, which some critics dismissed as a niche peripheral.
However, experts caution that the experience may not match the Steam Deck's integrated hardware. “Latency and screen quality depend entirely on the phone,” noted tech analyst Rebecca Torres of GadgetInsights. “But for cloud gaming or local streaming, it's a clever hack that could be game-changing.”
The timing of the launch—same day as the controller—signals strong confidence from Mechanism. Pre-orders open on April 27 via the company's website. The 3D print files will be available on Thingiverse and Printables starting May 4.
